I cant believe I havent either, but now that theres a great article about them in inc magazine, I have. From the article: Sixteen years ago they hawked $10 T-shirts featuring their own artwork from a card table on the corner, making themselves scarce whenever the cops swung past. Its a one-way street so one of us could always keep watch, says Bert Jacobs, who is now 41, the older brother by three years. We had a folding table so we could pack up quickly. Its great to hear the founders of a $100 million business saying things like: Dont determine that youre going to be happy when you get the new car or the big promotion or when you meet that special person, explains John. You can decide that youre going to be happy today. John also points out that the assertion is, in fact, a modest one. Its important that were saying Life is good, not Life is great or Life is perfect,' he says. Theres a big difference. We know that there are lots of bad things in the world. But overall life is good. Work/Family Balance Is For Everybody Sometimes the subject of work/family balance seems to be all about parents and kids, but that would be erroneous. Everyone needs to take time off the job and do something that renews their spirit so they can come back to work refreshed and ready to go. Navigating uncertain times in your job as a single person has a different set of challenges because single adults are often living away from the network of family. Family can certainly be stressful, but family also is a support system for most of us. We need to be part of some definition of family even if that family is an online support group we never see in real life. In some ways, parents have more clear cut boundaries about work commitments. A child comes with obvious responsibilities and you clearly must say no, I cant work late sometimes to take care of those responsibilities. A single person sounds selfish, even to their own ears, when they want to say no, I cant work late because they paid for a yoga class and it is not refundable. Why is the idea of losing out on a yoga class fee selfish? I dont think it is, particularly if its an expensive class. Everybody needs to have the ability to do these things outside of your work schedule: maintain friendships take care of your health find leisure activities you enjoy Maybe we should call it work/life balance, instead, because people who live alone still need to have an identity outside of their job description. Itâs no wonder that âgamificationâ is becoming more and more popular in business applications. Employees performing multiple ârolesâ is nothing new. Many jobs have multiple roles built in. But theyâre built into the job. But itâs still fairly common to keep people assigned, locked-in, to a particular job or department. In baseball, however, at all levels, the value of the âutility playerâ is recognized. In Bridge, the âno-trumpâ hand is considered the most difficult game to win â" and therefore offers the most points. A classic organizational management technique is âjob rotation.â Todayâs complex organizations should prompt them to consider revitalizing this process. It would benefit both the organization and the individuals selected. Does the âdesignated runnerâ rule key any possibilities? Why not recognize that in certain situations, you should call on a âspecialistâ to perform in a specific situation? Itâs not in any way demeaning to the person (who by the way just got a hit) and it doesnât remove the player from the game. Itâs an outstanding example of teamwork. The Little League rule of âEveryone must play â" everyone must batâ has an interesting connection to hiring. The Little League teams that play in their World Series attract the best players in their region, in their countries. The coaches identify and select young talent, talent thatâs capable of playing multiple positions well, talent that excels in at least one, perhaps two or more positions. There are clearly star performers based on their season performance. At the same time, other players often have the opportunity to âstarâ in a game â" and they often do. The rules of the game give everyone the opportunity to excel. The Ultimate Value Of Teamwork Itâs not mentioned in the ârulesâ, but the teams in the Little League World Series display the ultimate in competitiveness and sportsmanship. They definitely celebrate their individual and team successes, for individual at-bats and games. But they also acknowledge the successes of their opponents. Teams from Asia bow to the opposing teams and its fans after a game; they bow to their own families and supporters. They express gratitude for their success and for the support of their fans. Unique to Asian participants, NO! This is the same gratitude expressed by the bows of Broadway casts and hundreds of performers in gratitude for attending and applauding a performance. While itâs commonplace to be thanked for placing an order, e.g., in a restaurant, and itâs even common to be thanked upon payment by the server, Iâm always impressed by the business that also thanks me when Iâm leaving the building. On the other hand, Iâm unimpressed when I walk out of a theater or a stor e, and it feels like no one knows I was even there. And For Job Seekers While the messages from Little League Baseball are primarily for leaders and managers, there is a message here for job seekers as well. Job seekers should be expressing gratitude to potential employers â" even if they donât get the job or even the second interview. More importantly, the Little League nature of teamwork is something job seekers should consider. Emphasize the multiple roles played on a team in your resume or during an interview. Ask for opportunities to take on additional roles in your current position. Leaders, managers, and job seekers can learn a lot about outstanding performance from the outstanding performance of these 11 and 12-year old Little Leaguers. The answers are easier than you would think.List your abilities up frontOne of the most common mistakes applicants make after an employment gap is listing work experience in chronological order.The resume should start with a summary, not career objective, stating your most important abilities and how they correlate to the job at hand. Communication, team leadership, marketing and sales, etc. are all important factors to list upfront, especially when facing a career transition.Here is an example of a career summaryAdministrative betreuung professional with 13 years professional experience coordinating and managing offices for governments, military, and professionals.
